Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh enters tenth year
The Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh has entered its tenth year, marked by deepening humanitarian challenges and a lack of progress in repatriation to Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Currently, more than 1.2 million refugees reside in Bangladesh, primarily within the Cox’s Bazar camps and on Bhasan Char.
Humanitarian conditions are deteriorating due to shrinking international aid and increasing environmental risks. Recent heavy rains caused mudslides and flooding that killed 16 people. Over half of the refugee population is under the age of 18, facing limited access to education and livelihoods.
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam stated that the government is working to maintain diplomatic pressure in international forums to facilitate safe returns. However, charity organizations, including Human Concern International, warn that the crisis is becoming a ‘forgotten one’ as global attention shifts to other conflicts, leading to a critical reduction in necessary funding.
