Rohingya survivors recount Myanmar military atrocities nine years later
Nine years after the Myanmar military conducted violent clearing operations in Rakhine State, Rohingya survivors continue to recount the atrocities committed during the 2017 attacks. One survivor, Rokeiya Begum, now living in Australia on a humanitarian visa, described the destruction of the village of Tula Toli, where soldiers killed men and boys and set villages ablaze.
During the August 2017 operations, conservative estimates suggest more than 7,000 Rohingya were killed, and over 700,000 people were forced to flee. The violence aimed to displace the ethnic Muslim minority from the predominantly Buddhist nation. As a result of these operations and ongoing instability, more than a million Rohingya have sought refuge in Bangladesh.
