Rohit Roy sparks controversy by calling television a ‘dustbin medium’

Actor Rohit Roy has sparked significant controversy within the Indian entertainment industry after describing television as a ‘dustbin medium’ during an interview on the Kindle Cast YouTube channel. Roy claimed that television content is easily forgettable and lacks the creativity found in cinema, which he described as being ‘for posterity.’ He further suggested that television actors lack the ‘carriage,’ grace, and dignity possessed by film stars, specifically criticizing their public conduct and style.

His remarks have drawn sharp criticism from various industry professionals. Actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee remarked that Roy’s identity is largely tied to his brother, actor Ronit Roy, and questioned why he would demean the medium that provided his career. Actor Pankit Thakker advised against ‘spitting into the plate that gave you your first meal,’ noting that television provides the foundation for many successful careers. Naman Shaw also criticized the remarks, suggesting they were irrational.

In contrast, casting director Mukesh Chhabra defended television actors, praising their professionalism, discipline, and ability to adapt to demanding roles. Chhabra noted that many successful actors are discovered through television, highlighting their dedication and commitment to the craft.
