Rohit Sharma climbs to 8th on ODI run list, surpasses 16,000 runs

On 13 June 2026, Indian opener Rohit Sharma played the first One‑Day International of a three‑match series against Afghanistan at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. He scored 16 runs off 16 balls, including a six that took his ODI tally to 11,593 runs, overtaking South Africa’s Jacques Kallis to become the eighth‑highest run‑scorer in ODI history. In the same innings Sharma also passed the 16,000‑run mark as an opening batsman, the fastest to do so in 384 innings, joining an elite group that includes Sanath Jayasuriya, Chris Gayle and Virender Sehwag. India restricted Afghanistan to 194 runs, securing a comfortable chase. The achievement makes Sharma only the second Indian opener after Sehwag to reach the 16,000‑run milestone and cements his place among cricket’s all‑time greats.
