Rojales highlights subterranean heritage in Alicante caves

The town of Rojales, located in the Vega Baja del Segura region of Alicante, is highlighting its unique subterranean heritage through the Cuevas del Rodeo. Originally built by stonecutters as rock-excavated homes to replace precarious cane and mud structures, these dwellings formed an underground urban network that housed generations until the early 20th century.

Today, these caves have been transformed into the Municipal Ecomuseum of the Subterranean Habitat. The site features 15 cave-dwellings that now serve as artisanal workshops, exhibition halls, and a craft market. The area is characterized by a distinct aesthetic of whitewashed facades, blue doors, and small patios, blending Mediterranean and bohemian styles.
