Rojava administration enters new political phase following military integration

The integration of the autonomous administration in Rojava into the Syrian state has entered a new political phase. General Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced in Qamishli that the phase of integrating military, security, and administrative institutions into state structures is complete.

Despite this milestone, significant friction remains between the Rojava administration and the Damascus government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa. While an agreement mediated by the US in January aimed to prevent massacres and ensure the return of displaced persons, critics argue that Damascus is imposing a centralized approach that threatens Kurdish rights. Key points of contention include the status of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), the right to education in the Kurdish language, and the safe return of displaced populations.

The SDF has integrated four brigades into the Syrian army under Kurdish command, but concerns persist regarding the long-term security of these forces and the preservation of the democratic achievements established during the years of autonomy.
