Rojava integration debates and Semalka border expansion

A research report by the SAMER Field Research Center examines discussions regarding the integration of Kurds in Rojava into the Syrian state structure. The study, which analyzed social media discourse between August and September 2026, notes a shift in focus from the potential dissolution of the Democratic Syrian Forces (DSF) as an independent military body toward broader concerns regarding political, cultural, and security rights.

Researchers identified three primary perspectives on integration: an optimistic view seeing it as a path to political normalization; a conditional view requiring guarantees for language, culture, and political representation; and a critical view fearing assimilation and the loss of existing rights. The study characterizes the current sentiment as “conditional hope,” where the central question has shifted from whether integration will occur to what kind of order it will create.

In a separate development related to regional movement, the Semalka Border Crossing management announced that the crossing between the Kurdistan Region and Rojava will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting November 1. This change aims to facilitate both passenger transit and commercial activities by removing previous time restrictions.
