Roku expands interface features as specialty streaming services grow

Roku recently held a press event in New York to unveil new streaming devices, wireless cameras, and interface updates. The platform introduced features such as a “Coming Soon to Theaters” row, personalized sports highlights, and short-form content sections for food and home topics. While Roku’s hardware division reported a loss of $80.4 million during the 2024 fiscal year, its platform and advertising business generated approximately $1.89 billion in gross profit.

In the broader streaming market, specialty subscription video on-demand (SVOD) services are outpacing premium general-entertainment apps. According to a report from measurement firm Antenna, 31 specialty services reached over 42 million paying subscribers in the second quarter, marking a 14 percent increase year-over-year. This growth rate significantly exceeds the 6 percent increase seen in premium SVOD services. These specialty platforms, which often cater to specific genres or communities, frequently gain subscribers through exposure on marketplaces like Amazon Prime Video Channels, The Roku Channel, and Apple TV.
