Roku launches Roku Labs to test experimental applications

Roku has launched Roku Labs, a new program that allows users to test experimental applications and features directly through a dedicated tile on the Roku Home Screen. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between engineers and viewers by allowing users to provide feedback that influences future development.

Initial experimental applications include Roku Stocks for portfolio tracking, Roku Weather for forecasts, Backdrops Studio for custom artwork, and Roku Immerse for personalized screensaver environments. The game ‘Roku City Dash’ has already graduated from the program and is now widely available.

In addition to the testing program, Roku is expanding its platform capabilities. A redesigned Home Screen is set to roll out in Mexico and Brazil, and the company is introducing premium streaming subscription bundles in the U.S. and Mexico, offering combinations of services like AMC+, Starz, and Hallmark+ at discounted rates. Furthermore, Roku has made the source code for Roku LT OS, the operating system powering its remotes and smart home products, available as open source for developers.
