Roland Corporation is celebrating 808 Day 2026, commemorating the 1980 debut of its iconic TR‑808 Rhythm Composer. The company has partnered with London‑based NTS Radio for a three‑part series titled “The Future Is Still 808,” broadcast on August 8, 11 and 22 and later available on‑demand.
Hosted by NTS artist Shy One and produced by documentary filmmaker Nick Dwyer, the series traces the TR‑808 from its Japanese origins at Roland to its role in shaping house music in Chicago, techno in Detroit, and a wide range of contemporary scenes across Asia, Europe and South America. It highlights the machine’s lasting influence on modern genres such as hip‑hop, trap and electronic music.
