Role of international reserves in monetary stability
International reserves function as assets that back the central bank's balance sheet and bolster confidence in a national currency, rather than serving as government savings for public spending. Using these reserves to finance fiscal deficits or short-term political programs can lead to significant economic instability, including inflation, currency devaluation, or hyperinflation.
In Mexico, these reserves are held by Banco de México and are not part of the federal budget. They cannot be utilized to fund social programs, public works, or fiscal deficits. Instead, their primary mandate is to preserve monetary stability. These assets are accumulated through exports, remittances, foreign investment, tourism, and exchange rate operations.
