Rolex celebrates 100 years of the waterproof Oyster case

Rolex is celebrating the centenary of its Oyster case, an innovation introduced by founder Hans Wilsdorf in 1926. The Oyster was the first wristwatch case to be completely waterproof and dust-resistant, achieved through an innovative screwing system for the bezel, case back, and crown.

Following this breakthrough, the brand introduced the patented Perpetual rotor in 1931, which enabled efficient automatic winding. This combination led to the creation of the Oyster Perpetual collection. The Oyster series has since been utilized by explorers and scientists in extreme environments, ranging from deep oceans to high mountain peaks.

Beyond its historical and technical significance, Rolex remains a prominent symbol of status and achievement. For many collectors, particularly the Baby Boomer generation, the brand represents a reward for professional success and serves as a tangible asset that often retains or increases in value over time, making it a subject of interest for alternative investment portfolios.
