Rolleston to City Bus Trial Continues Under Metro

The Rolleston–City Direct bus trial, launched in September 2025 with routes 84 and 85 operated by Bentley Coachlines, will be taken over by the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) on 10 August 2026. The service will be integrated into Metro, providing a consistent experience for passengers.

From the takeover date, the timetable will see minor timing adjustments, including added later trips for shift workers and the removal of two trips to better match capacity. Fares will be $3 when paid with a Metrocard or contactless Motu Move, and riders will gain access to Metro’s bike racks, pet‑allowance, and free two‑hour transfers. Boarding and alighting will occur inside the city interchange building, with audio announcements to improve accessibility.

The trial is scheduled to run until June 2027, after which the council will evaluate its future in the upcoming Long‑Term Plan.
