Rollie Sheldon, two-time World Series champion pitcher, dies at 89

Former New York Yankees pitcher Rollie Sheldon has died at the age of 89. According to reports, Sheldon passed away on August 31 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Sheldon was a member of the Yankees' back-to-back World Series championship teams in 1961 and 1962. During his 1961 rookie season, he recorded 11 wins while playing alongside Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Over his three-plus seasons in New York, he maintained a 23-15 record with a 4.14 ERA and 202 strikeouts.

Before his professional baseball career, Sheldon served in the U.S. Air Force and played both baseball and basketball at the University of Connecticut. His major league career also included stints with the Kansas City Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees organization issued a statement expressing their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
