Rolls-Royce mtu engines receive U.S. Navy certification for autonomous vessels

Rolls-Royce has announced that its mtu Series 4000 and Series 2000 marine engines have received certification from the U.S. Navy for use in autonomous naval vessel operations. This certification supports the Navy's expansion of its unmanned fleet and aligns with requirements from the 2021/2026 National Defense Authorization Act for unmanned systems.

The certification ensures that these propulsion systems can support 30-day sea deployments without requiring human intervention or preventive and corrective maintenance for main propulsion, fuel, and oil systems. The mtu Series 4000 passed two 720-hour durability tests and can provide up to 4,300kW of propulsion power or 3,000kWe of power generation. The Series 2000 was certified following rigorous component testing and thousands of hours of field operation, offering up to 1,939kW of propulsion power.

These advancements are intended to meet the growing demand for unmanned surface vessels (USVs) that require long-endurance capabilities and reliable technology to operate without onboard maintenance crews.
