Teófimo López wins WBA welterweight title against Rolly Romero

Teófimo López defeated Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero via majority decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to capture the WBA welterweight championship. With this victory, López becomes a three-division world champion, having previously held titles in the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions.

The bout was a closely contested 12-round fight. Judges scored the contest 116-112 and 115-113 for López, with the third judge declaring a 114-114 draw. A critical moment occurred in the fifth round when Romero landed a heavy left hook that caused a significant cut over López’s right eye and briefly wobbled him. However, López maintained his composure, utilizing his speed and movement to control much of the later rounds.

Following the match, López expressed his intention to pursue further unifications in the welterweight division, specifically targeting fighters like Liam Paro or Devin Haney. Romero, who was making his first title defense, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, suggesting the outcome was influenced by politics.
