Roma women in North Macedonia face high violence risk due to low employment
Data from the Commission for Prevention and Protection against Discrimination reveals that between 2022 and 2024, only eight out of 100 Roma women were employed in North Macedonia. This lack of economic independence places Roma women at a significantly higher risk of domestic violence, as poverty and a lack of personal income limit their ability to leave abusive environments.
Sabina Asanova, president of the Roma Association ‘Rodop’ from Shtip, noted that discrimination persists in employment searches, healthcare facilities, and the educational system. She highlighted that fear, financial insecurity, and a lack of support systems discourage many women from reporting violence. Key barriers to labor market inclusion include unformalized education and systemic poverty.
Psychologist Vesna Trajkovska emphasized the necessity of institutional support and increased awareness to prevent and respond to domestic violence, stating that victims must not be left to face the consequences alone.
