Roman Amphitheatre of Mérida opens new visitor routes

The Roman Amphitheatre of Mérida has expanded its visitor areas by opening the tribune located above the Puerta Pompa. This development allows tourists to access symbolic areas of the monument that were previously excluded from standard itineraries, offering panoramic views of the archaeological site.

Promoted by the Consorcio de la Ciudad Monumental de Mérida, the project involved an investment of nearly 90,000 euros. The improvements include the installation of new walkways and the enhancement of existing ones to better connect different sectors of the amphitheatre. These changes aim to facilitate visitor movement and provide a more comprehensive understanding of how the building functioned during the Roman era.

To ensure safety, new metal and glass railings have been installed, designed to integrate with the monument without obstructing views. The upgrades also include new access points to areas linked to the Puerta Pompa and one of the vomitoria, the corridors used to communicate different areas of the amphitheatre.
