Roman Empire origins of major European cities

Several major European cities originated as Roman colonies or military camps during the expansion of the Roman Empire. Unlike cities such as Paris or Marseille, which existed prior to Roman conquest, locations like London, Vienna, and Barcelona were established through Roman settlement and evolved into significant urban centers over the centuries.

London traces its origins to Londinium, a trading center established on the banks of the Thames following the conquest of Britain in 43 AD. Despite being destroyed during the Boudiccan revolt, it grew into a major continental trading hub and eventually a modern metropolis.

Vienna developed from the legionary fortress of Vindobona, situated on the Danube to protect the empire's northern border. The city grew around this military camp, eventually becoming the capital of Austria.

In Spain, Barcelona originated as the Roman colony of Barcino, which flourished through maritime trade. Similarly, Valencia was founded in 138 BC to accommodate Roman military veterans, establishing a strategic position on the Mediterranean coast.
