Roman General Tiberius crushes Batonian revolt in present‑day Bosnia

In 8 AD, the future Roman emperor Tiberius defeated the Batonian revolt, a large‑scale uprising of Pannonian, Bosnian and Dalmatian tribes against Roman rule. The rebellion, led by the tribal commander Baton, began in 6 AD and quickly spread across the territory of modern Bosnia, where the rebels employed guerrilla tactics and temporarily drove Roman forces from the region.

Rome responded by dispatching roughly ten legions, auxiliary troops and Thracian allies. Tiberius, operating from the province of Sarmatia, adopted scorched‑earth measures that caused disease and famine among the insurgents. Facing these hardships, the Batonian forces surrendered on the river Bathinus (identified with a site in present‑day Bosnia), ending the revolt that had been described by Suetonius as the most serious challenge to Rome since the Punic Wars.
