Roman history exhibitions open in Lillebonne and Nîmes

Various exhibitions in France are highlighting the daily life and material culture of the Roman era. In Lillebonne, the Roman Theatre is hosting an exhibition through October 31 focused on ancient gastronomy. Based on archaeological findings and research by experts such as Yves-Marie Adrian, the display uses illustrated panels and artifacts to reconstruct the Roman diet from the 1st to 3rd centuries. The exhibit features items such as amphorae, ceramics, and oyster shells, illustrating a menu that included beef, poultry, pork, fish, legumes, olive oil, and garum.

In Nîmes, the Musée de la Romanité is hosting a temporary exhibition titled ‘l’art romain du Louvre, un monde d’images,’ which runs until January 10, 2027. This exhibition, held in collaboration with the Louvre, explores the role of art within Roman civilization. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, the collection emphasizes how art was integrated into daily life, religious practices, and social functions through various objects, ranging from glassware to significant masterpieces from the Louvre’s collections.
