Roman Kafka indicted for multi-million CZK fraud

Roman Kafka, a former judge of the Brno Regional Court, has been indicted for large-scale fraud. The indictment was filed with the Regional Court in Ostrava on October 14. Prosecutors allege that Kafka committed 70 counts of fraud, obtaining more than 32.3 million CZK under false pretenses, with total damages to victims estimated at 23.29 million CZK.

Kafka admitted to borrowing money under fabricated excuses and failing to repay it, though he claimed he acted out of necessity to pay individuals who were allegedly threatening and blackmailing him. The case began last spring when Kafka resigned from his judicial position and disappeared, eventually being apprehended by police in Croatia.

If found guilty, Kafka faces a prison sentence of five to ten years. A proposal for a plea agreement was not accepted by the supervisory prosecutor. Kafka is currently under restrictions that include a ban on leaving the Czech Republic and the requirement to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
