Roman man charged in €990 spoofing fraud targeting Bassano victim
The Carabinieri of Bassano del Grappa identified a 28‑year‑old man from Rome as the suspect in a fraud that netted €990 from a local resident. The victim, a 30‑year‑old Bassanese, received a message on 13 February from a number saved in his phone as a friend’s contact. The caller pretended to need urgent money for dental expenses and credit‑card problems, prompting the victim to make an instant bank transfer to the account provided.
Investigation traced the beneficiary account to the Roman suspect, who is already known to law‑enforcement for similar offences. He was placed under investigation and referred to the judicial authority. Police urged citizens to verify the identity of anyone requesting money, even when the request appears to come from a trusted contact, and to confirm via a separate call before transferring funds.
