Roman Michelko criticizes Arts Council Slovakia operations
Roman Michelko, chairman of the parliamentary committee for culture and media, has criticized the current functioning of the Arts Council Slovakia (FPU). He noted that despite previous legislative changes in 2024, the council's decision-making process remains problematic.
Michelko highlighted concerns regarding the distribution of subsidies, citing a potential analysis suggesting that 20 percent of applicants received 80 percent of the funding. He also pointed out inconsistencies in commission results and criticized the lack of a correction or appeal mechanism for applicants.
Currently, a 13-member council makes final decisions, which Michelko argues lacks sufficient oversight. He stated that members of parliament, who bear responsibility for the fund, currently have no influence over the council's composition. A new legislative proposal is being considered to address these issues, potentially taking effect at the beginning of next year.
