Roman military camp discovered in La Ercina, Spain

Archaeologists from the University of León have identified a 1.7-hectare Roman military camp in La Ercina, located in the Montaña Oriental region of León, Spain. The site is situated approximately 500 meters from La Peña del Castro.

Researchers believe the camp is linked to the siege and conquest of local Iron Age settlements during the Cantabrian Wars. Excavations have uncovered stone walls, a claviform entrance, and military artifacts, including weaponry and soldier footwear studs. The camp featured a defensive stone wall roughly 1.5 meters wide and an internal earth platform used for patrolling.

This discovery provides significant new evidence regarding Roman military presence and conquest strategies in the Cantabrian slope of the province, where such links to indigenous settlements were previously scarce.
