Roman ruins discovered during Vienna cooling network expansion

Archaeological excavations conducted during the expansion of Vienna’s district cooling network have led to the discovery of Roman remains. Kristina Adler-Wölfl, head of Vienna City Archaeology, noted that while water and sewage excavations often lack the necessary depth, the current cooling network projects reach depths sufficient to uncover historical artifacts and structures.

Working in collaboration with Wien Energie and Wiener Netze, the city’s archaeologists highlighted that these street excavations offer a vital opportunity to learn more about Vienna’s Roman origins. The findings focus less on portable items like coins or jewelry and more on structural remains that provide insight into the ancient city’s infrastructure.
