Roman shipwreck discovered off the coast of Sicily

Divers have discovered a roughly 2,000-year-old Roman shipwreck off the coast of Sicily, near the town of Mazara del Vallo. The vessel, measuring approximately 21 meters in length and 6 meters in width, was found at a depth of about 46 meters.

The wreck contains hundreds of ancient clay jars known as amphorae, specifically Dressel 1A types, which were commonly used by Romans to transport goods such as wine, oil, and grain. Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the find as one of the most significant underwater archaeological discoveries in recent years.

The investigation was initiated after local fishermen reported the site to authorities. The Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage is currently conducting research using divers and underwater cameras to further study the site and map ancient Mediterranean trade routes.
