Roman sword discovered in Bremen
An ancient Roman sword has been discovered in Bremen, Germany, by workers from an ordnance disposal service. The find is considered unique for both Bremen and northern Germany.
State archaeologist Dieter Bischop noted that the 90-centimeter iron blade, which features a bronze hilt, was found vertically embedded approximately 3.5 meters deep in the ground. Experts believe the weapon may have been intentionally placed there by a Germanic leader or clan chief during the late second or early third century AD as part of a ritual sacrifice.
Preliminary soil investigations suggest the site was once a river or lake. Such vertical placements in water bodies are characteristic of Germanic offering rituals from the Roman imperial period, where looted weapons were surrendered to the gods. The artifact is expected to be displayed at the Bremen Focke-Museum following further investigation.
