Roman villas uncovered in San Giovanni a Ruoti and Bomarzo

Archaeological excavations are uncovering significant Roman villas in different regions of Italy.

In the province of Potenza, the Roman villa of San Giovanni a Ruoti is being excavated after nearly fifty years of inactivity. The project involves a collaboration between the Municipality of Ruoti, the University of Basilicata, the University of Macerata, and the Superintendency. The initiative aims to secure the site, study its walls and mosaics, and promote local tourism and cultural identity in the Basilicata region.

In Bomarzo, a Roman villa dating from the 1st to 2nd century AD has been discovered during excavations for a photovoltaic plant. The site features mosaics and a large basin that archaeologists believe may have been part of a thermal complex. Findings include a bronze coin depicting Emperor Caracalla. The complex shows evidence of continuous use through the 5th and 6th centuries, with settlement traces in the area dating back to the 4th century BC.
