Romance scam leaves man with 53 cents in bank account
A 62-year-old man, Juan Carlos Pérez, has reported being the victim of a sophisticated romance scam that left him with only 53 cents in his bank account. The victim stated that he met a woman named Lilith on social media, who claimed to be a nurse from North Carolina working on a medical mission with the U.S. Army in Israel.
The perpetrator allegedly promised Pérez 10% of her $2.7 million savings in exchange for assistance in transferring the funds. Following the establishment of an emotional connection through photos and messages, the victim provided personal information and made several payments to the individual, whom he had never met in person.
The Guardia Civil has previously issued warnings regarding these types of fraudulent schemes, noting that criminals use emotional manipulation to build trust before requesting money or sensitive personal data.
