Romance scams target seniors with significant financial losses
Scammers are increasingly targeting seniors through romance scams, often using social networks or dating apps to build false relationships. Perpetrators frequently pose as successful professionals, such as doctors or pilots, to establish trust before requesting money for urgent needs like medical expenses, legal bail, or shipping fees.
According to police, women constitute up to 87 percent of romance scam victims, with average financial losses exceeding 500,000 CZK. Beyond financial damage, victims often suffer psychological distress and debt. Authorities advise following the ‘3Z’ rule—stop, hang up, and check—and warn against sending money to anyone not met in person or keeping relationships secret at a partner's request.
