Romania: 650 town halls face budget risks over digital payment deadline

Approximately 650 Romanian town halls have not yet enrolled in the Ghișeul.ro national online payment platform. Vice Premier Oana Gheorghiu announced that all local administrations are obligated to use the system to facilitate online payments for taxes, fees, and other local obligations.

Failure to comply by the August 25 deadline carries significant financial risks. Local administrations that remain unenrolled may face a suspension of certain state budget transfers, including portions of income tax and other funds intended to balance local budgets. The initiative is framed as a necessary step toward the digitalization of public services and modernizing the state.
