Romania economic trends show mixed business activity and international expansion

Romania's economic landscape shows mixed indicators for the first half of 2026. According to the National Trade Register Office (ONRC), 9,687 companies suspended their activities in the first six months, a 2.56% decrease compared to the previous year. Bucharest recorded the highest number of suspensions at 1,192, while sectors such as wholesale and retail trade saw significant increases in activity suspensions.

In contrast, the agricultural sector is seeing international expansion. Romanian fertilizer producer Norofert is investing 2 million EUR to build a new factory and biotechnology laboratory in Guatambu, Brazil. This project, supported by funding from the Banco Regional de Desenvolvimento do Extremo Sul (BRDE), aims to produce microbiological inoculants and bio-pesticides.

Trade relations with the Mercosur bloc remain significant, with Brazil accounting for 86.1% of Romania's exports to the four member nations in 2024. Meanwhile, domestic insolvency trends show a rise in new cases, with over 1,000 files reported in July 2026, a 26% increase compared to the previous year, particularly in regions like Bucharest, Ilfov, and Bihor.
