Romania engages in EU policy reform and UN map vote controversy

Romania and ten other EU member states, including France and Germany, have signed a proposal to reform European Union foreign policy by moving from unanimity to qualified majority voting in certain areas. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu clarified that the country is not renouncing its veto right, which is protected by EU treaties, but is instead supporting mechanisms to accelerate decision-making and require states to justify their use of the veto. This move has faced domestic political criticism in Romania regarding the mandate of the current government to commit to such major policy shifts.

Separately, a diplomatic controversy has emerged following a United Nations General Assembly resolution regarding a new global map projection. Romania voted in favor of the resolution to promote more accurate geographic representations, such as correcting the size of Africa. However, the resolution sparked backlash from Ukraine and several other nations because the new map visually separated the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine. In response to concerns raised by Ukrainian authorities, Moldova chose to abstain from the vote, stating the decision was made to avoid the political use of new cartographic representations.
