Romania advances blood transfusion technology amid regional supply shortages

The Bucharest Blood Transfusion Center has introduced a national first: a leukocyte-depleted platelet pool. This blood component is created through the automated and standardized processing of whole blood, where white blood cells are filtered out. The final product provides a therapeutic dose of platelets in a single unit for an adult patient.

This innovation aims to reduce the risk of HLA alloimmunization and provide more efficient treatment for patients with hematological or oncological conditions, particularly those undergoing intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or organ transplants. Dr. Lucia Grijac, director of the center, noted that the achievement is a result of technological investment and the consistent support of blood donors.

Meanwhile, in Covasna County, the Sfântu Gheorghe Blood Transfusion Center is addressing a critical shortage of blood products. Despite higher summer donation rates, hospital demand for complex surgeries and emergency cases is depleting stocks. To replenish reserves, the center has scheduled mobile collection campaigns in Întorsura Buzăului on September 16 and Târgu Secuiesc on September 30.
