Romania advances law to digitize civil status document verification

The Legal Committee of the Chamber of Deputies has issued a favorable report on a legislative proposal initiated by the USR party to digitize the verification of civil status documents in Romania. The law would require state institutions to verify birth and marriage certificates ex officio through an integrated information system, rather than requiring citizens to present physical copies.

The measure aims to reduce bureaucracy and prevent citizens from having to repeatedly provide documents that the state already holds in digital format. Under the proposal, the physical presentation of such documents would only be permitted in clearly defined exceptional circumstances.

The initiative has received cross-party support. Bogdan Ciucă of the PSD, president of the Legal Committee, noted the urgent need for public institutions to interconnect to avoid redundant information sharing. Members of the AUR party also announced their support for the project. The legislation is set to proceed to a decisive vote in the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies.
