Romania advances railway electrification and solar power projects

Romanian rail operator CFR signed a contract worth 97.34 million lei to design the electrification of the Brașov–Podu Olt–Sibiu–Târgu Mureș railway corridor. The first lot, covering Brașov to Podu Olt, is valued at 25.84 million lei. Electrified tracks will allow speeds up to 100 km/h, cut diesel use by more than 10 % and boost freight and passenger volumes while reducing greenhouse‑gas emissions.

A construction consortium led by Electro‑Alfa Internațional from Botoșani began building a large photovoltaic park near the CET II Holboca plant in Iași. The 49.72 million‑lei project will install over 14,000 panels on 1.31 ha, delivering an estimated 9.85 GWh of electricity per year—about one‑third of the city's demand. Funded by the EU Modernisation Fund, the solar park aims to be operational by the end of next year and is part of a broader effort to modernise Iași’s energy infrastructure.
