Romania advances energy transition with major storage and solar investments

Romania is seeing significant investment and legislative movement in the energy sector, particularly regarding renewable energy and storage. Hidroelectrica has awarded a contract to Synergy Construct for a massive Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Iron Gates II hydropower plant. The project, valued at approximately 296.8 million lei, will feature a 64 MW installed power and a 434.76 MWh storage capacity, supported by European Modernisation Fund financing.

In Brașov, the Israeli group Econergy has connected a 70 MW/141 MWh battery storage system to the national grid at its Pârâu 1 photovoltaic park, marking a major step in its Romanian strategy. Additionally, Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport is implementing a 31.8 million lei project to install over 5,000 photovoltaic panels and a 6 MW storage system to increase energy independence.

On a local level, municipalities like Roșia de Amaradia and Vlădești are pursuing energy autonomy through community energy projects, including heat pumps for schools and photovoltaic fields to reduce administrative costs. Nationally, the promulgation of new laws is facilitating the completion of long-stalled hydropower projects, such as Răstolița, to bolster energy security.
