Romania and Bulgaria see surge in wheat exports

Romania and Bulgaria have experienced a sharp increase in wheat exports during the first three months of the 2026/27 marketing season. Combined exports from these two Black Sea region EU members have risen by 35% compared to the same period last year.

Romania has emerged as the European Union's largest exporter of soft wheat, with 3.68 million tonnes exported. Other significant wheat exporters in the bloc include Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, and Bulgaria.

In contrast to the wheat trends, EU corn imports have grown by 40% annually since the start of the season on July 1. This surge is driven by a need to compensate for a projected weak EU harvest due to drought. Imports from the United States have tripled, while deliveries from Ukraine have nearly doubled. Meanwhile, Brazil's market share in the EU corn sector has declined.
