Romania and Germany Maintain Schengen Border Checks

Romanian authorities have temporarily reinstated border controls on the main road links between Satu Mare County and Hungary. In a recent operation, mixed Romanian‑Hungarian teams checked roughly 1,000 people and 500 vehicles, issued 11 fines, and withdrew one vehicle registration and a set of licence plates. The checks are part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration, cross‑border crime and customs fraud.

Germany’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt, rejected a European Commission proposal to end internal Schengen controls, stating that the checks remain essential for fighting illegal migration and people‑smuggling networks. Germany will therefore continue to maintain its internal border inspections, underscoring a broader EU debate over the balance between free movement and security.
