Romania's ANAF rolls out online tax meetings and uncovers multi‑million lei frauds

From 17 June 2026 the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) will allow a range of tax procedures – inspections, audits and hearings – to be conducted by videoconference, according to Ordinance 705/2026. Taxpayers registered in the Private Virtual Space (SPV) must confirm participation within two working days; non‑response is treated as a decline. All video meetings are recorded and archived, and participants must provide identity details in advance.

During the same period ANAF’s intensified controls uncovered extensive irregularities. Checks on hundreds of Romanian taxpayers identified unjustified wealth amounting to about 540 million lei, and additional tax claims of 540.2 million lei with secured assets over 123.5 million lei. A separate audit of a security‑services firm revealed a scheme that concealed roughly 350 000 hours of undeclared work, generating a budget loss of more than 15.4 million lei. The agency also flagged numerous cases of dubious income, large undeclared capital increases and unpaid liabilities, prompting a series of fiscal‑penalty decisions.

These actions illustrate ANAF’s dual focus on modernising taxpayer interaction and tightening enforcement against large‑scale tax evasion.
