Romania and Moldova eye European Capital of Culture titles

Romania and the Republic of Moldova are positioning themselves for future European Capital of Culture designations. According to the European Commission's calendar, Romania is set to host the title in 2034. The first applications for this cycle are expected in the autumn of 2028, with finalists selected in 2029. Romania has previously held the title through Sibiu in 2007 and Timișoara in 2023.

The European Commission is introducing a new framework for the 2034 edition, focusing on long-term legacy rather than just events held during the title year. The new criteria will simplify the application process by reducing evaluation sets from six to four and will place greater emphasis on youth participation, civil society, and cross-border projects.

In the Republic of Moldova, authorities are looking toward a potential 2033 designation. Local public authorities interested in applying have until October 4, 2026, to submit their files. Following a national pre-selection, a single location will represent the country in the European competition. Minister of Culture Dan Suruceanu noted that the competition is open to all locations, regardless of population size, provided they demonstrate a long-term cultural development vision and sustainable management.
