Bucharest’s Basarab Bridge Closed for 10‑Month Renovation

The Basarab pedestrian bridge in Bucharest began a major renovation on 20 June 2026. Tram lines that cross the bridge were suspended, and from 29 June traffic will run alternately on a single lane in both directions while the other lane is worked on. The work, expected to last about ten months, aims to secure the bridge’s final reception after it operated for 15 years without a formal hand‑over. Repairs include replacing degraded metal railings, fixing drainage systems, resurfacing the deck, cleaning and treating concrete, and upgrading lighting. The city scheduled the works for the summer holidays to minimise disruption, with full traffic expected to resume in the autumn.

The mayor emphasized that the renovation will not affect the bridge’s structural integrity and that it is part of a broader program of infrastructure upgrades in Bucharest.
