Romania and Moldova see surge in company insolvencies
Data for the first quarter of 2026 shows a sharp rise in corporate insolvencies in both Romania and Moldova. In Romania, 66 firms with assets over €1 million entered insolvency between January and March, up from 25 in the same period in 2025, bringing the total number of insolvencies to 1,829, with 738 recorded in March alone. The most affected sectors are construction, retail, transport, energy, industry and services, and the agricultural sector also saw its insolvency count nearly double.
In Moldova, sociologist Ian Lisnevschi highlighted a similar upward trend in the number of insolvent enterprises, questioning official narratives of robust investment and development. While specific figures were not provided, the commentary underscores growing financial strain on businesses across the country.
