Romania and Moldova win medals at International AI Olympiad

Students from Romania and Moldova achieved significant success at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) 2026 held in Kazakhstan. The competition featured hundreds of participants from over 100 countries.

The Romanian team secured eight medals out of eight possible entries, finishing fourth globally ahead of nations including the United States, Japan, and China. The Romanian medalists included three gold winners, two silver, and three bronze. Notable gold medalists were David Georgescu, Alexandru Thury-Burileanu, and Roland Petrean.

In its first participation in the competition, Moldova earned three medals: one silver won by Alin Popescu and two bronze medals won by Ion Pavelescu and Octavian Harcel. All three Moldovan students are from the ‘Orizont’ Theoretical High School.
