Romania and United States social security agreement enters into force

A social security agreement between Romania and the United States officially entered into force on September 1. The agreement is designed to protect the social rights of citizens who have worked in both countries.

A key feature of the accord is the ability to aggregate periods of social security contributions. This allows years worked and contributions paid in Romania and the U.S. to be combined to establish pension eligibility, ensuring that work periods are not lost due to differences between the two national systems.

The agreement also aims to prevent the double payment of social security contributions for certain categories of self-employed workers and seconded specialists. Furthermore, the new framework is expected to facilitate employee mobility and support economic investment by making it easier for Romanian and American entrepreneurs and investors to plan human resource movements.
