Romania anthrax vaccination campaign faces delays
The annual anthrax vaccination campaign for livestock in Romania is facing significant delays. According to Viorel Andronie, president of the College of Veterinary Doctors, six counties currently lack the necessary vaccines to begin immunization, while in 24 other counties, the campaign is still ongoing following delayed supplies.
In 11 counties, the vaccination process began in the spring and has already been completed. The delays in the remaining areas are attributed to issues such as insufficient funding, procurement difficulties, and a lack of budget. Experts emphasize that timely planning of vaccine orders is critical, as manufacturers require lead time for production and delivery.
Anthrax, caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is a highly infectious disease that primarily affects herbivorous animals but can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products. Because bacterial spores can survive in the environment for long periods, consistent vaccination is considered essential for preventing outbreaks.
