Romania approves 2026–2030 railway infrastructure development plan
The Romanian government has approved the 2026–2030 Railway Infrastructure Development Plan to address significant technical deterioration across the national rail network. The plan focuses on maintenance, renewal, modernization, and expansion, with a particular emphasis on priority projects within the European TEN-T railway corridors.
Data indicates that the condition of the network has worsened due to long-term funding shortages. The length of railway lines exceeding their technical lifespan rose from 10.10% in 1990 to 72.56% as of 2025. During the 2021–2025 period, available funding met only 45.76% of the actual requirements, leaving a maintenance and repair gap exceeding RON 12 billion. This lack of investment has contributed to speed restrictions and declines in both rail passenger and freight transport.
