Romania implements diesel excise reduction as annual inflation falls to 8.16%
Romania's Ministry of Finance has announced a temporary 20% reduction in the excise duty for standard diesel, effective from August 16 to August 31, 2026. This measure, enabled by Law no. 162/2026, aims to mitigate the impact of rising international diesel quotations and pump prices on consumers, transport companies, and farmers. The reduction amounts to 560.86 lei per 1,000 liters, which could save drivers approximately 34 lei on a 50-liter tank if fully passed on to pump prices.
Separately, data from the National Institute of Statistics shows that Romania's annual inflation rate fell significantly to 8.16% in July 2026, down from 10.42% in June. Analysts, including Flavius Valentin Jakubowicz of the Association of Financial-Banking Analysts (AAFBR), note that this decline is largely an arithmetic correction due to the removal of the 2025 energy shock from the calculation base, rather than a fundamental improvement in domestic inflation. While the headline rate has dropped, services prices saw a high annual increase of 13.67%, and non-food goods rose by 7.93%.
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has revised its year-end 2026 inflation forecast upward to 6.1% from 5.5%, citing the impact of heatwaves and droughts on electricity production and energy availability.
