Education sectors in Romania and Serbia begin new school year

The 2026–2027 school year has commenced across various regions, marked by both modernization efforts and systemic challenges. In Romania, significant educational shifts are underway, including a curricular reform being piloted in Cluj where high school students will soon have greater autonomy to choose disciplines based on future career paths.

Infrastructure and staffing remain key concerns. While some communities, such as Bujoreni, have introduced modernized classrooms with smart boards and new furniture, national reports indicate that approximately 700 educational units face space or authorization issues. Additionally, teacher staffing stability and the arrival of textbooks have been noted as ongoing hurdles.

In Serbia, the Olga Petrov Radišić Elementary School in Straja opened its doors to 16 students, though teachers noted the need for building renovations. Meanwhile, various institutions are celebrating milestones, such as the Laude-Reut Educational Complex marking 30 years of operation, and the Catholic Saint Joseph National College in Bacău beginning the year with traditional religious ceremonies.
